| Rightwing
militias are active throughout the country, initially brought into existence
to battle the FARC, they now also fight rival militias for territorial
control.
The umbrella organisation known as the AUC
has been long criticised for the brutal methods it's forces use, in
particular against the civilian population. The militias are also known to
receive support from wealthy landowners and Government forces.
Human rights groups report that this
collaboration is rampant and that joint operations take place in both urban
and rural locations.
